For months Senator Obama has been denying rumors he’s Muslim. The allegations, which started in Insight Magazine and continued by e-mail, claimed Obama’s father was a radical Muslim and that Obama went to Muslim school while living in Indonesia. However, both the article and e-mails have been thoroughly debunked.
Now Senator Obama finds himself with a different set of problems. His campaign has been allegedly avoiding Muslim affiliations. Two women wearing headscarves were not allowed to sit behind him at a rally within view of the camera. Even though he called them both personally to apologize, the media doesn’t think that is good enough. Also, the Muslim community has also expressed displeasure with Obama’s campaign referring to the incident of him being a Muslim as ’smears.’

However, when faced with the Muslim allegations Obama replied, “I’m not a Muslim American but so what if I were Muslim?”
He said it perfectly. Why should it matter what religion he is? It shouldn’t. It should have no bearing on his campaign for presidency. There is a little document called the Bill of Rights, after all. Unfortunately, it still matters to some people.
Now, I offer a hypothetical situation. What if the women with headscarves had sat behind Senator Obama? What if he got all chummy with the Muslim community? What would the news media be saying then?
They put the man in a catch 22 in which anything he did would be reported negatively. Then they patted themselves on the back for being so clever. Can’t anyone else see these aren’t even real issues? They are brilliant distractions from the real issues. The sad part is people fell for it.
